The Saint Teresa of Calcutta Award

The Saint Teresa of Calcutta Award, formerly known as the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Award, is intended to focus public attention and confer recognition to those who, like Blessed Teresa, have dedicated a significant portion of their lives in the service of the “poorest of the poor” and have served, and shall continue to serve, as an inspirational, living example to the world.

The award search and selection is an annual project of the JCI Philippines – Manila and the AY Foundation, Inc. since 1983.

This year’s awardee shall receive a cash grant of five hundred thousand pesos, at least half of which should go to a charitable institution of his or her choice, along with the special donation of 500,000 pesos worth of goods and services.

Deadline for submission of nominations is July 31, 2017. 


Who may be qualified for the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Award?
Any living individual, regardless of race or religion, who has dedicated himself fully and selflessly to humanitarian work among the poor, the orphans, the dying, the handicapped, the unwanted, the oppressed, the aged, and other less privileged Filipinos for at least 25 years.

How can an individual be nominated?
Nominations may be made by any individual, institution, association, or organization through the downloadable nomination forms.

How is an awardee selected?
The Saint Teresa of Calcutta Award Committee is the governing body of the entire project, and shall conduct a preliminary screening of the nominees by discussing the merits of each and every candidate, to ensure that each one has complied with all the requirements. The Committee then forwards the results of its deliberation to a separate Board of Judges, who, in turn, shall select the recipient/s of The Saint Teresa of Calcutta Award 2017. The Board of Judges shall be composed of illustrious individuals of unimpeachable integrity and have similarly distinguished themselves in their chosen field of endeavor.

What are the selection criteria?
The primary basis for the selection of the recipient/s of the Saint Teresa of Calcutta Award is the extent to which the nominee has humbly, and without seeking gratification, devoted at least 25 years of his life in the service of the less fortunate members of the Philippine society. Moreover, he/she must possess unquestionable integrity and simplicity of lifestyle following the example of the late Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

When is the deadline for the submission of nomination forms?
Nominations should be submitted by July 31, 2017.

As a physician, he devoted his days in rendering free medical services to the needy villagers of far-flung barrios of Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental.


A nun from Quezon City, she devoted her life to the paraplegics in Bahay Pangarap, Bahay Kakayahan, and Bahay Liwanag, homes for the disabled.


She is the founder and director of the St. Martin de Porres Clinic in 1959, which later became the St. Martin de Porres Hospital.

1993 - SR. EVA D. MAAMO, SPC

 She is a physician who led several medical missions all over the country and provided free medical clinics and feeding centers to depressed areas.


She was hailed as the comforter of the forgotten and displaced Aetas at Floridablanca and Porac, Pampanga.


He was dubbed as the “Builder of the Emmaus Village” in the depressed areas in Moonwalk, Talon, La Piñas.


As a lawyer, she championed the cause of juvenile delinquents and street children in Cebu City.

1998 - FR. PIERRE T. TRITZ, SJ (Co-awardee)

A Jesuit Missionary, he founded the Educational Research and Development Assistance (ERDA) Foundation. Maintaining the schooling of 85,000 school children from indigent families

1999 - SR. MILAGROS A. DAYRIT, RA (Co-awardee)

 She is the moving spirit behind the Mother Rosa Memorial Foundation (MRMF), an NGO dedicated to provide the poor with opportunities for socio-economic empowerment and uphold their dignity as human beings.

1999 - SR. M. PAULA VALERIANA V. BAERTS, ICM (Co-awardee)

A Belgian-born missionary, she devoted much of her life nursing the disabled at the National Orthopedic Hospital and Tahanang Walang Hagdanan.

1999 - SIR MILAGROS B. ALARCON, FMM (Co-awardee)

He is a Filipino missionary who co-founded the Catholic Tokyo International Center, personally addressing the needs of Filipino migrants in Japan, both materially and spiritually.

2000 - FR. GRATIAN MURRAY, AFSC (Co-awardee)

A La Salle brother turned priest who founded the Bacolod Boys’ Home and St. Joseph‘s High School, he became the guardian and breadwinner to thousands of street children and orphans.

2000 - SR. MAGGIORINA N. ARENAS (Co-awardee)

Leaving the congregation of the Daughters of St. Paul after 25 years, she lives with the Mangyans in the mountains of Oriental Mindoro to attend to their needs.


The Bishop Emeritus of Surigao, he founded “A Chance for the Poor Foundation” which provides free medical, surgical, and hospitalization services to the indigenous people of Mindanao—particularly the Lumads.


Championing the rights of the poor, underprivileged and oppressed since the 1960’s, he also organized various programs for the youth offenders, abused women, and abandoned children.

2001 - LAUREANA A. FRANCO (Co-awardee)

She devoted her life teaching Catechism to children in public schools, seminarians, and lay people in the archdiocese of Manila, and was awarded “Pro Ecclesia Et Ponte” by Pope John Paul II in 1990.

2002 - SR. CARMEN V. LOCSIN (Co-awardee)

A Filipina missionary nun in Japan for 30 years, she has ministered to the needs of migrants and entertainment workers, especially those abused by employers and husbands.


Educator, legislator, diplomat, civic leader, and a promoter of art and culture, she is a women’s rights advocate, and a true servant of the poor.


The Philippines’ most influential cleric, he was instrumental in the defeat of the Marcos and Estrada regimes and in the installation of two women as presidents. He worked to uplift the poor and downtrodden and did not hesitate voice his opinions when the rights of the poor are trampled.


An advocate of the underprivileged youth and women for over 65 years, she manned different public offices and implemented programs for out-of-school and delinquent youths and women susceptible to exploitation.


An anthropologist who actively advanced the rights and welfare of the Aetas of Zambales, he assisted in securing and developing their ancestral land and reestablishing their cultural roots.


He is a dedicated priest who founded the Center for Migrant Youth (CMY) in 1982, which houses and cares for migrant youths, providing them a fighting chance at life in Manila.

2007 - DR. FE DEL MUNDO, M.D.

Pediatrician, scientist, educator, author, public health advocate and humanitarian for over sixty years, she has founded several children‘s health and welfare institutions, most notably the Children’s Memorial Hospital.


A devoted charity giver, she organized and motivated numerous charity organizations to expand to street children, urban poor, women in crisis, and families and individuals dispossesed by society.


An Italian-born Canossian nun who has been serving impoverished Filipinos since 1962; she established and conducted various programs in education, livelihood, health, evangelization, lay empowerment, and spiritual formation.


She is a Spanish educator dedicated to the rehabilitation of poverty-stricken Filipinos through the Makabata School Foundation, Inc., offering free basic education, supplies, and meals to students, as well as support and livelihood programs for their parents.


Establishing Pag-asa ng Pamilya Scholarship Foundation Inc., Tahanan ng Pagmamahal Children’s Home Inc., and Grace to Be Born, Inc., he has spent over 43 years giving scholarships to the underprivileged, and providing shelter to abandoned children and mothers in crises.


A physician and philanthropist providing medical assistance to tribal communities and remote areas, his notable projects include “Ambulansyang Kabayo” (Horse Ambulance), “I-text si Doc” mobile consultation, and child feeding programs in the mountains of his home province of Sarangani.


Founder of Chosen Children Village Foundation, Inc. (CCVF) in 1986—aspires to provide a permanent home for abandoned, neglected, and surrendered children who are mentally and physically challenged.


She is a missionary of New Tribes Mission who teaches literacy to the Aeta community of Banauen, Zambales. She also organizes dental, medical, and even mass weddings for the community.​

He is a German-Filipino priest who has dedicated his life to helping the marginalized poor communities and informal settlers in the Philippines for the past 40 years.

Citi Volunteers Support Freedom Walk

Hundreds of volunteers from Citi Philippines, led by CEO Aftab Ahmed (third from left), joined persons with disabilities in the annual Freedom Walk recently held at the Quezon City Hall. 
Now on its 6th year, the event was organized by the Alyansa ng May Kapansanang Pinoy (AKAP-Pinoy) in partnership with the local government of Quezon City.Adopting the theme “Every Right-full Step We Take, All Barriers We Break,” the Freedom Walk aims to give persons with disabilities a united voice in pushing for their rights, acceptance and inclusion in society.
