The Isko’t Iska Task Force stages its traditional community play in its 33rd year, titled “Isko’t Iska 2023: Chrissy’s Overload”. The freshman-led cast provides a fresh perspective to decades old crises and struggles.

This year’s production centers in the heart of every Filipino eskinita–the humble karinderya. Aling Chrissy’s Karinderya acts as a stomping ground for Batong Maliit, a barangay stuck between a rock and a hard place. As Francisco “Isko” Asuncion and Chesca “Iska” Masipag maneuver their life inside the university, they quickly realize that their hardship within the four walls of their classrooms transcend their community. When the community’s beloved Chrissy’s Karinderya gets endangered due to gentrification, Isko and Iska band together alongside the pillars of their barangay to overcome the crisis.

“Isko’t Iska” is community play in UPLB which started in 1979 by different cultural organizations in Southern Tagalog, headed by Umalohokan, Inc. (formerly Teatro Umalohokan). With its early production dating back to the height of Martial Law, it has become an avenue for highlighting the current multi-sectoral struggles of the masses through the power of character representation and visual storytelling. Since then, student artists and cultural organizations from UPLB team up every year to work collectively under the Isko’t Iska Task Force.

This year’s production will be led by an all-freshman cast, directed by Joseph Curbilla, Sey Blanco, Iyah Ilagan, Axcel Beltran, and Gabriel Nafura. The original script was written by playwrights headed by Clyde Naranjo and Fels Calza. Music and lyrics creatively produced by the Isko’t Iska Musical Team headed by Meg Guiang with accompaniment from Harmonya: The String Ensemble of UPLB.

“Chrissy’s Overload” is free for everyone and will run for a limited time at University of the Philippines Los Baños’ (UPLB) Dioscoro L. Umali Theatre from Nov. 8-10, 2023.
