"Maghihintay ako… - Manuel” This has been the talk of the town since numerous billboards with that statement were put up all over the Metro, and along the SLEX and NLEX. Who is Manuel? What is he waiting for? Is this a proposal? Questions have been circulating around the news as well as in social media.

All these questions boil down to one -- who is behind it?

The time has come for Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU) to emphasize its historical significance to the new generation. Their plans for coming back into the limelight involved the campaign billboards we’ve seen around Manila. The campaign heralds the university's many plans to continue its legacy into the future.

“It’s about time that we get back on track and build the culture of excellence and legacy of becoming an outstanding institution,” New San Jose Builders, Inc. (NSJBI)  co-chairman and MLQU president Dr. Isagani Germar said.

Since New San Jose Builders' acquisition of MLQU last October 2014, the university's plans for upgrading are beginning to take shape. At the top of its priority are reclaiming its role as a breeding ground for nation-builders and producing graduates that would attain 100% passing rate in board and bar exams.

The new leadership of MLQU assures that with the help of the new management, today’s generation of Quezonians would be able to meet and even exceed the glory of the university's past.

SIKAT ‘PAG QUEZONIAN

MLQU has produced notable Quezonians who have made an impact in their respective industries. Among these are Rustica Carpio (academician and multi-awarded actress on stage, film, and television) who first appeared in Ishmael Bernal’s Nunal sa Tubig in 1976. She made over50 other films in her more than 30 years in the industry. Eleven of these movies were directed by film genius Ishmael Bernal, earning her the reputation in the movie industry as a Bernal favorite.

For her accomplishments, Dr. Carpio is a recipient of over 50 national and international honors and awards which includes being one of the Ten Outstanding Women of the Philippines in 1968 from Federacion Internacional de Abogadas (FIDA Phil.) for her invaluable achievements in the field of performing arts.

She was also cited in The World Who’s of Women, Vol. 6, 1982 published in England by the International Biographical Centre.

Another alumnus who made a name for himself is Neil Perez, an officer of the Philippine National Police Aviation and Security Group, he won the title of Mister International Philippines in a pageant held in Seoul, South Korea on February 14.

The list of MLQU outstanding alumni is endless, and some of them held the position of Secretary of Justice in the person of Justice Ricardo C. Puno Sr.(1979-1984), Justice Sedfrey Ordoñez (1987-1990) and Justice Artemio Tuquero (2000-2001) while Justice Ricardo Villarama Jr.,Justice Venicio Escolin, Justice Jose Melo, Justice Jose Vitug Justice Ruben Reyes and Justice Isagani A. Cruz went on to become associate justice of the Supreme Court.

Others who have gained fame in the practice of law are: Juctice Carmelita Manhan, Atty. Benjamin Tabios, Justice Alicia Sempio-Dy, Justice Nicolas Lapena, Atty. Norberto Quisumbing, Justice Manuel Pamaran, Justice Hilarion Aquino, Justice Roberto Abad, Justice Perlita Tirona, Justice Jose Vitug, Judge Jesus F. Guerrero, Justice Renato Dacudao, Atty. Ma. Luisa Dizon-Villarama, Justice Serafin Camillon, Justice Nicolas Lapena Jr,. Justice Luis Victor, Justice Enrico Lanzanas, Justice Ricardo Ilarde, Justice Ricardo Lagman, Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang, Justice Jose Hernandez, Justice Samuel Martires,  Atty, Conrado Vasquez, Atty. Medwin Dizon and Atty Danilo Lopez.
Meanwhile, MLQU graduates who made notable achievements in government service include Former Foreign Affairs secretary Alberto Romulo; Former Commission on Elections chair Benjamin S. Abalos ;Former Labor Secretary and Senate President Blas F. Ople; Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin; Department of Trade and Industry undersecretary Lilia de Lima; Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz; Tarlac Governor Jose V. Yap;Former Chairman, PCGG Magtanggol Gunigundo; Former Agrarian Reform Secretary and former Bulacan Governor Obet Pagdanganan; Former Senator Wigberto Tañada Former Senator Wenceslao Lagumbay; and Congressmen Rodolfo Albano Jr., Pangalian Balindog, Fredrick Abueg, Silvestre Bello III, Antonio del Rosario, Samuel Pagdilao and Reynaldo Umali.

Not to be forgotten are Police Senior Inspectors John Gary Erana, Max Jim Tria, and Rennei Tayrus, who served the country and sacrificed their lives as part of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force's “Fallen 44”.

With its many graduates who have achieved distinction in their field, MLQU is indeed a school for achievers and future heroes. This is because through quality education and training, MLQU strives to produce nationalistic, competent, educated, and upright Quezonians imbued with a spirit of selflessness and commitment to being ofservice to society. This is why many Quezonians have become sikat in their respective fields.

MLQU MOVING AHEAD

MLQU offers courses such as Law and Paralegal Studies, Education, Arts and Sciences, Accountancy and Business Arts, Engineering, Graduate Studies, Criminology, Architecture, and Information Technology. Under the new management’s supervision, there is a plan to add a course on real estate management. All of these courses would not be possible without the credible and reliable faculty and deans who are industry experts and who graduated from top universities here and abroad in order for the school to offer world-class education.

MLQU als aims to establish its presence in Balanga,Bataan, as well as strengthening its Professional School, the School for Professional Advancement & Con btinuing Education (SPACE), which would further upgrade the level of education that they provide.

With the involvement of its alumni, the public can expect more changes and improvements in MLQU.

MLQU recently held a grand alumni homecoming at the Edsa Shangri-La, Manila, with the theme: "MLQU Regaining its Glory! Sikat ‘pag Quezonian" hosted by Luanne Dy and GMA Kapuso host Drew Arellano. The event was attended by famous MLQU Alumni and notable government officials. (The Lifestyle Portal)

World singing champion Jed Madela dropped his latest album “Iconic” earlier this month without notice, making him the first Filipino artist to release an album unannounced.

Living up to its album title, “Iconic” features Jed’s unique versions of tracks by music icons such as Madonna (“Like A Prayer”), Mariah Carey (“Love Takes Time”), Celine Dion’s “That’s The Way It Is” feat. 5thGen), and Whitney Houston's (”Didn’t We Almost Have It All”). Jed is the only male Filipino artist to release an album featuring the said divas’ hits.

“For a time, I was reported to have lost my voice due to sickness, and this album proves that I still have it. I’ve done things in this album that I had not done before, and you’ll know what they are if you listen to ‘Iconic,’” said Jed.

“Iconic,” Star Music’s biggest album for 2015, also marks a first for Jed – a duet with Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid in the classic song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

Jed also experiments with new sound and sumptuous beats with EDM-laced tracks such as his remake of Christina Aguilera’s pop ballad “Beautiful,” “Like A Prayer (Brian Cua Sunset Remix),” “Beautiful (Moophs Remix),” and Jed’s original composition “Welcome To My World,” which acts as the album’s opening and closing tracks served up in two versions.

Also included on the 14-track list are Jed’s remakes of Barbra Streisand’s “Evergreen,” Gloria Estefan’s “Don’t Wanna Lose You Now,” Tiffany’s “If Love is Blind,” and Toni Braxton’s “You Mean the World to Me.”

“Iconic,” produced by Jonathan Manalo and Jed, is now available at all record bars nationwide for only P350. Digital tracks can also be downloaded via leading record stores all over the country and in online music stores such as iTunes, Mymusicstore.com.ph, Amazon.com, and Starmusic.ph. Lazada, Southeast Asia’s leading online shopping and selling destination, kicks off its Big App Sale on 21 May 2015. The four-day event promises to bring the best mobile app-exclusive promotions across all product categories to consumers in the Southeast Asia.

This exclusive sale extravaganza brings the best deals to thank Lazada’s rapidly growing number of app users for their support. Since the company launched the Android  app in June 2013 followed by the iOS app in January 2014, mobile app downloads have reached over 11 million to date in the region. The Android app has consistently ranked among the daily top four shopping apps in Southeast Asia. In April this year, the iOS app has been featured as a recommended shopping app about 70 times daily on the regional App Store.

The Rise of Mobile and Mobile Apps

According to Google’s Consumer Barometer 2014 report, smartphones (41%) and tablets (15%) are the most commonly used mobile devices in the Philippines, as compared to computers (36%). This mobile-first consumption changes the way consumers now browse and shop online.

Lazada has also seen a surge in mobile app downloads across the region, which has grown over 75% since December 2014. There were approximately 1.5 million or close to 50,000 downloads per day in April alone.

“We bring Southeast Asia’s largest online shopping mall to our consumers anytime and anywhere, with a best-in-class effortless mobile app shopping experience. Besides fantastic deals during our Big App Sale, consumers get access to the widest range of
international and local products at their fingertips and enjoy secure payment options such as cash-on-delivery,” said Inanc Balci, CEO of Lazada Philippines.

The Lazada Big App Sale

The Lazada Big App sale kicks off on 21 May offering four different promotions for shoppers to get the maximum value from their purchases via mobile apps. App users can enjoy crazy deals each day at 9am, 12pm, 6pm and 9pm.  For additional value, Lazada app users can enjoy an extra 10% discount off a selected category every day, and vouchers giveaways. There will also be a ‘PhP 99 Store’ with 100 deals priced at only PhP 99.

Lazada Philippines is also excited to announce the first-ever Globe Sunday promo where an exclusive 10% discount voucher will be available to Globe prepaid, postpaid, TM and Tattoo customers on Sunday, May 24. This additional discount is valid for purchases made on the Lazada Mobile App and is applicable on all items. Globe Sunday is the first exclusive promo to run after the recently signed partnership between the country’s no.1 mobile brand Globe Telecom and the largest e-commerce player, Lazada Philippines.

The Lazada Mobile App Shopper

Consumers spend more time browsing per session on the mobile app than the desktop, with an average of 7.3 minutes on Android and 8.5 minutes on iOS, as compared to 4.5 minutes on the desktop in the Philippines. There are also more females than males using the mobile apps, with the majority of 65% aged between 25 to 44 years old. The most popular product categories shopped on the mobile apps in April are Home and Living, Mobile and Tablets, Home Appliances, and Health and Beauty in the Philippines.

The Lazada Mobile App Shopper Across Six Southeast Asian Countries

Age group

·           Across all six countries, the biggest group of mobile shoppers are within the 25-34 age group (average 45% on Android; 51% on iOS).

·           This is followed by the 18-24 age group (average 22% on Android; 24% on iOS) for all countries except Singapore (16% on Android; 17% on iOS).

·           The number of shoppers age 45 and above are comparable among all countries (average 10% on Android; 7% on iOS) with Singapore having a higher variation (14% on Android; 10% on iOS).

Gender

·           Women are trumping men in mobile shopping in the Philippines

Android Users: 56% are female, 44% are male
iOS Users: 61% female, and 39% are male

Time spent per app session

·         In the Region, iOS shoppers spend the most time at 7.2 minutes on average versus 6.5 minutes on Android.

·         Philippines shoppers spend the most time on the site at 8.5 minutes on iOS and 7.3 minutes on Android, while Singapore shoppers spend the least, at 5.4 minutes on iOS and 5.1 minutes on Android.

“Certainly mobile shopping is more convenient and hassle-free, and that is why we think it’s bucking traditional shopping trends when it comes to gender. With an average time spent per session by mobile app shoppers being under ten minutes, it clearly beats travelling out and navigating the crowd in physical malls,” said Inanc Balci, CEO of Lazada Philippines. Manny Pacquiao thanked the millions of Filipinos who threw their support for him in his last fight against Floyd Mayweather, Jr. when he paid ABS-CBN a visit yesterday for a dinner with the company’s executives who threw him a hero’s welcome.

“I really give my thanks to ma’am Charo Santos-Concio and sir Gabby Lopez, and everyone who helped in the coverage of my fight. And I cannot forget Ging Reyes, who I now address as ma’am, for she was the first person to ever interview me during the Ledwaba fight, my first in the US,” Pacquiao gushed with appreciation, adding while laughing, “nobody bothered to interview me then, I had to look for someone to interview me!”

ABS-CBN COO Carlo Katigbak, with ABS-CBN President Charo Santos-Concio and Integrated Sports head Dino Laurena, handed a special plaque from the “Isang Bayan Para kay Pacman” efforts to the People’s Champion for putting up a gallant stand against Floyd Mayweather, Jr, with Katigbak adding, “You proved to the world, that whatever hardship faces us, we will stand up and put a fight,”. The “Isang Bayan Para Kay Pacman” campaign was a movement of the Kapamilya network to gather all Filipinos under one banner to inspire Manny to perform in the ring.

"The 100 million punches as support for me were huge, the #OneForPacman hashtag was really huge,” the ring icon bared, addressing the crowd at the 9501 restaurant of the ELJ Communications Center at Mother Ignacia. “They gave me the strength, the belief, that I can fight Mayweather.”

The final tally was more than what the champion expected. A staggering 126 million punches were collected by the “Isang Bayan Para Kay Pacman” campaign of ABS-CBN in an effort to inspire the Filipino ring icon in the biggest fight of his career two Sundays ago. This was made possible via the use of the #OneForPacman hashtag in all their social media posts and by clicking the interactive punching bag at the oneforpacman.abs-cbn.com website, people were able to show that their fist is one with that of Manny when he stepped inside the ring.

The Pacman was also shown a special TV plug that details the beginning and end of the “Isang Bayan” campaign to which the boxing icon smiled from ear to ear. “Every week, Dyan kept updating me, ‘Manny it’s 10 million, 20 million…’ then at the end, I was so surprised that it went beyond 100 million!” he exclaimed.

Pacquiao also made rounds inside the ABS-CBN compound where he visited the set of TV Patrol and the booth of DZMM to grant short interviews. The moment he stepped inside the ELJ Communications Center, a huge throng of employees waving “Isang Bayan Para Kay Pacman” flaglets greeted the Filipino ring icon at every turn in the Mother Ignacia compound.

Before he departed, Pacquiao hinted that thoughts about retirement were pushed back due to the massive support he got from Filipinos and the Kapamilya network through their “Isang Bayan” campaign. “When I box, I make Filipinos proud and happy. To me that is the best feeling in the world.” (The Lifestyle Portal)
